Think of a fun summer Sunday.
What probably came to your mind was either a day at the beach, lounging by the pool, or having a barbecue. Or staying in with your beloved AC, couch, TV and cold beer. That’s cool.
But because I want to explore Flanders more (and be a bit more outdoorsy), we did something different: I gathered all my courage + sunscreen to cycle the 20km that separates our town from De Gavers.
That is not such a great distance if you’re used to biking since you could walk, but me and the bike had never had such a loving relationship (we’re trying to make it work, though).
To my surprise, the way there was easy: flat, shady and beautiful. It went along the river Dender, fields, woods and towns.
It was quiet and I loved to feel the soft breeze on my face, hear the birds and watch the flowers and the sun shining down on the water.
I was tired and relaxed at the same time.
De Gavers is a fantastic place to spend a sunny day: there’s a big lake where you can rent boats, canoes or paddles, a “lake beach” where you can swim and play sand sports, a pool and water slide, playgrounds, a mini golf course, skateboard ramps, trampolines, tennis courts, big picnic areas all around, with grass and trees and a big café where we had a nice meal, cold beer and ice cream.
It’s been too hot to just lie in the sun, so we played mini golf (the course has plenty of shade) and swam. It felt SO good to be immersed in cold water and relax.
I am glad we stopped talking about it and finally did it.
Your neighborhood / country might have more to offer than you know.
