DIY Halloween: fake wounds and bites

Our friend’s Halloween-themed birthday party coincided with the beginning of The Walking Dead - Season 4.

Being all pumped-up by watching the first episode, it was obvious we would be zombies for her party but we had no make-up or know-how.

“How about we go to Aalst and check out the Carnaval shops?”

And so we did. Aalst is famous for its Carnaval and you’d expect a bunch of costume stores in the center, but no. We had to Google it and go off the shopping street to actually find one.

We bought some face paint and wax (Snazaroo Special FX) but waved off the fake blood.

The bite on my arm was based on the following tutorial, which I used as inspiration but obviously had to adapt to what material I had.

The wax was surprisingly easy to use – you just have to scoop it up, roll it a bit between your fingers and stick it where you want the fake wound to be.

For a first time, I think I did a pretty go job. Unfortunately, it was warm inside and the wax melted slowly, which made the wounds look more gory, gross and Halloweeny. The bite actually looked more inflamed and like it was oozing pus with the passing hours.

It’s easy to clean: just wipe it and wash it off. Definitely worth trying for a thrilling, scary, not-much-of-a-hassle Halloween costume this year!
